Research

research overview

  • My research interests are in the use of satellite and airborne remote sensing techniques, integrated with in situ observations and modeling, to understand changes in the Earth System, with a primary focus on the Earth's ice cover. In particular, my research focuses on the contributions of ice sheets and high-latitude glaciers to sea level rise and their relationship to the changing climate. Toward that end, I have been heavily involved in the development of NASA's Ice Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) and its successor, ICESat-2, and I have worked on cryospheric applications of various other satellites and aircraft instruments. I also continue to be consulted by NASA and other organizations for my perspectives on space-based science missions and NASA organizational and project-management matters.

courses taught

  • GEOG 2271 - Introduction to the Arctic Environment
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2023
Rising temperatures, shrinking sea ice and melting glaciers are only the most visible indications of a rapidly changing Arctic. This course addresses the climate of the Arctic and the changes being observed at a non-mathematical level. It is intended to provide students with a basic understanding of the Arctic physical and biological environment as well as the impacts of Arctic change on human and environmental systems.
  • GEOG 4110 - Special Topics in Geography
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018 / Spring 2019
Various topics not normally covered in the curriculum; offered intermittently depending on student demand and availability of instructors. See also GEOG 4100 and GEOG 4120. May be repeated up to 8 total credit hours.
  • GEOG 5100 - Special Topics: Geography
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018 / Spring 2019
