The majority of Prof. Bielefeldt's research focuses on engineering education including: ethics, social responsibility, community engagement, and sustainability. In addition, the recruiting and retention of students in engineering, teaching core engineering knowledge and professional skills, self efficacy, and identity are inter-related themes. She is mentoring PhD students researching: community engagement and service activities of military engineers; nanolearning; engineering entrepreneurship education. She is also collaborating on research exploring innovation self-efficacy among engineering students, inquiry-based STEM learning in rural high schools, and supporting engineering faculty.
