research overview

  • Joost de Gouw's research interests are focused on the sources and chemical transformations of organic compounds in the atmosphere, and the role that these processes play in air quality and climate change. He uses field measurements of organic compounds by mass spectrometry and gas chromatography. His current projects include urban pollution chemistry, the emissions and chemical transformations of VOCs in indoor environments, the impacts of wildfires on air quality, and the atmospheric impacts from oil and natural gas production.

  • ATOC 3500 - Air Chemistry and Pollution
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2022
    Examines the composition of the atmosphere and sources of gaseous and particulate pollutants: their chemistry, transport and removal from the atmosphere. Applies general principles to acid rain, smog and stratospheric ozone depletion. Recommended prerequisite: one semester of college-level chemistry or one year of high school chemistry. Same as CHEM 3151.
  • CHEM 3151 - Air Chemistry and Pollution
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2022

    Two Lect. and 3 hours of lab per week. Instruction and experience in using instrumental methods of chemical analysis to address problems in chemistry, biochemistry, industrial chemistry and environmental chemistry.

  • CHEM 5152 - Advanced Atmospheric Chemistry
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018 / Fall 2023
    Follows Graduate Atmospheric Chemistry (CHEM 5151) and explores advanced topics in atmospheric chemistry, such as secondary aerosol formation, oxidant formation, the chemistry of global climate change and/or design of advanced laboratory experiments. Recommended prerequisite: CHEM 5151 or ATOC 5151. Same as ATOC 5152.
  • CHEM 5181 - Mass Spectrometry, Chromatography, and Computer Programming
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2023 / Fall 2024
    Covers mass spectrometry, including instrumentation, ionization techniques, and interpretation of spectra. Analytical separation methods such as gas and liquid chromatography, ion mobility, and capillary electrophoresis. Introduction to atmospheric chemistry applications. Computer programming (Igor and LabVIEW) and simulation of instrumentation and processes. Department prerequisite: basic computer programming (or willingness to work hard on it), and undergraduate physics, statistics, and physical chemistry.
  • CHEM 6101 - Seminar: Analytical Chemistry
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2022
    Student, faculty, and guest presentations and discussions of current research in analytical chemistry. Required of all analytical chemistry graduate students. Credit deferred until presentation of satisfactory seminar.
