research overview

  • Dr. Robert O. Poyton teaches and heads a research group in the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He received his B.A. degree Summa cum Laude in Biology from Brown University, his PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of California, Berkeley, and his post-doctoral work in Biochemistry at Cornell University. Dr. Poyton has been recognized for his research on: oxygen sensing and hypoxic signaling; oxygen-regulated gene expression; mitochondrial biogenesis; redox signaling; the structure, function, and assembly of cytochrome c oxidase; mitochondrial dysfunction in aging and degenerative disease; and signaling pathways between the mitochondrion and the nucleus. Dr. Poyton’s recent research focuses on the role of a new mitochondrial pathway for nitric oxide synthesis and its role in intracellular signaling pathways, which are crucial for the survival of nearly all other organisms.
