Her scholarly work has focused on the research, development, and dissemination of practices that support new and veteran teachers working with marginalized populations in high poverty areas. Her two recent books, Listening: A framework for teaching across differences and Rethinking classroom participation: Listening to silent voices address these issues. In 2019, she published her most recent book, Distrust and educational change: Overcoming barriers to just and lasting reform, about the role of distrust in educational reform that draws on her work in Oakland and as a school board member and leader of professional development in international settings. She is currently working on two books: The Dignity of Teachers and Teaching and Practice: Keywords in Teacher Education.

The course reveals the complex relationship between schools and the larger society of which they are a part. Examines issues of diversity and equity from different disciplinary lenses, including history, philosophy, sociology and anthropology.

Examine how issues and dilemmas in teacher education are grounded in historical and political contexts. Analyze patterns in preparation of new teachers, in mechanisms used to govern entry into teaching and make determinations of quality of teachers and teaching, and in efforts to professionalize and de-professionalize teachers and teaching. Investigate contemporary teacher education debates to better understand potential research-policy-practice connections.
LEAD 4000 - Leadership in Context and Emerging Challenges: A Capstone

Integrates leadership topics and experiences students pursued through the Leadership Studies Minor. Using advanced critical thinking skills, the seminar requires students to evidence their knowledge, competencies and skills related to leadership theory and practice through examining contemporary leadership challenges. Further, the seminar directs students to justify decision-making processes, demonstrating their ability to synthesize prior knowledge to effect desirable, ethical outcomes.
