Research

research overview

  • Dr. Kane's research is focused on developing novel ways of interacting with computers, with a particular focus on contexts in which typical user interfaces are not effective, including designing user interfaces for people with disabilities and designing new user interfaces for wearable and mobile computing. Dr. Kane's recent work has explored alternative user interfaces for blind and visually impaired individuals, new user interfaces for wearable computers, and new tools to support 3D modeling and design for novice computer users.

Teaching

courses taught

  • CSCI 3002 - Fundamentals of Human Computer Interaction
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2018 / Fall 2019 / Fall 2020
Introduces the practice and research of human-computer interaction, including its history, theories, the techniques of user-centered design, and the development of interactive technologies. Covers computing in society at large with respect to domains such as health, education, assistive technology, ethics, environment, and more.
  • CSCI 4830 - Special Topics in Computer Science
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018
Covers topics of interest in computer science at the senior undergraduate level. Content varies from semester to semester. Only 9 credit hours from CSCI 4830 and/or CSCI 4831 can count toward Computer Science BS or BA.
  • CSCI 4849 - Input, Interaction, and Accessibility
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2019 / Fall 2020
Explores input and interaction techniques with an emphasis on universal design and alternative interfaces. Students explore traditional input methods such as keyboard and mouse input, and alternative techniques such as voice and eye gaze. Students conduct performance evaluations of existing techniques, and prototype new interaction methods. Students design technologies to support people with varying abilities and disabilities. Same as CSCI 5849
  • CSCI 5839 - User-Centered Design and Development 1
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2019 / Fall 2021
Develops the skills and practices necessary to apply user-centered approaches to software requirements analysis, and the design and evaluation of computer applications.
  • CSCI 5849 - Input, Interaction, and Accessibility
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2019
Explores input and interaction techniques, with an emphasis on universal design and alternative interfaces. Students will explore traditional input methods such as keyboard and mouse input, and alternative techniques such as voice and eye gaze. Students will conduct performance evaluations of existing techniques, and prototype new interaction methods. Students will design technologies to support people with varying abilities and disabilities. Same as CSCI 4849
  • CSCI 7000 - Current Topics in Computer Science
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018
Covers research topics of current interest in computer science that do not fall into a standard subarea. May be repeated up to 8 total credit hours.
