My research investigates issues in aerospace biomedical engineering and human physiology in extreme environments. My focus is to develop technologies to measure and mitigate the body’s adaptations to these unique conditions. I investigate human performance, biomechanics, and injuries in extravehicular activity (EVA) with wearable sensing systems. I have also developed methodologies for assessing changes in intracranial pressure (ICP) through the ear, by measuring changes in cochlear distortion product otoacoustic emissions. I have investigated the fundamental physiology of the eye and how its shape and pressure are also altered, including under artificial gravity centrifugation. I also investigate behavioral health outcomes in isolated, confined environments, investigating the use of virtual reality for attention restoration and relaxation. This work has been extended to assess alternative reality technologies (e.g. virtual and augmented reality) for spacecraft habitat design.
ASEN 4018 - Senior Projects 1: Design Synthesis
Primary Instructor
-
Fall 2020 / Fall 2022
Focuses on the synthesis of technical knowledge, project management, design process, leadership, and communications within a team environment. Students progress through the design process beginning with requirements development, then preliminary design and culminating with critical design. Offered fall only.
ASEN 4028 - Senior Projects 2: Design Practicum
Primary Instructor
-
Spring 2021 / Spring 2023
Focuses on the fabrication, integration, verification and validation of designs produced in ASEN 4018. Students work within the same teams from ASEN 4018. Offered spring only.
ASEN 4519 - Special Topics
Primary Instructor
-
Summer 2019 / Spring 2020 / Spring 2022
Studies specialized aspects of the aerospace engineering sciences or innovative treatment of required subject matter at the upper-division level. Course content is indicated in the online Schedule Planner. Department enforced prerequisite varies.
ASEN 5016 - Space Life Sciences
Primary Instructor
-
Spring 2022 / Spring 2024
Familiarizes students with factors affecting living organisms in the reduced-gravity environment of space flight. Covers basic life support requirements, human physiological adaptations, and cellular-level gravity dependent processes with emphasis on technical writing and research proposal preparation.
ASEN 5226 - Medicine in Space and Surface Environments
Primary Instructor
-
Spring 2023 / Spring 2024
Introduces concepts of space medicine and provides a focused analysis on exploration medical capabilities. This course provides a unique learning opportunity to understand the medical challenges of human spaceflight. This is done both in the classroom and in an immersive field simulation that allows students to engage in medical care in simulated planetary surface environments. As such, it also introduces students to important concepts in human spaceflight operations which are difficult to teach in the classroom.

Primary Instructor
-
Fall 2018 / Summer 2019 / Spring 2020 / Spring 2022
Reflects upon specialized aspects of aerospace engineering sciences. Course content is indicated in the online Class Search. May be repeated up to 9 total credit hours. Recommended prerequisite: varies.
ASEN 6316 - Extravehicular Activity
Primary Instructor
-
Fall 2023
Expose students to all aspects of extravehicular activity (EVA) to enable them to design systems to facilitate EVA for future human exploration. This course will draw upon the academic elements of design, engineering, technology development, physiology, operations, human-machine interaction, and geology to provide an interdisciplinary look at this topic. Recommended restriction: aerospace or biomedical engineering students with a focus in bioastronautics.
