Augmented Reality-Enabled Intuitive Trajectory Design with HoloAstro Journal Article uri icon

Overview

abstract

  • Recent research has investigated the potential utility of extended reality (XR) for making complex trajectory design tasks more intuitive, but the majority of XR trajectory design tools are designed to only solve a narrow subset of trajectory design problems. In this work, a novel software architecture for a customizable, extensible XR trajectory design tool is presented. HoloAstro, an implementation of this architecture for augmented reality (AR), is then used to demonstrate three examples of AR-assisted trajectory design: two-body trajectory design, three-body trajectory design using a precomputed tradespace, and three-body trajectory design using live computation. The development of HoloAstro and its underlying architecture brings a new level of customizability and flexibility to XR trajectory design tools, combining the physical interaction methods afforded by AR with the breadth of applications associated with traditional desktop trajectory design tools.
