Arapaho Plant Names Journal Article uri icon

Overview

abstract

  • This paper is intended to provide information on Arapaho plant names, & more generally to lay the groundwork for future ethnobotanical research with the Arapaho. Several traditional medicinal practitioners remain active on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming among the Northern Arapaho, & they are still widely consulted. In addition, various published sources dating back to the 1850s are available which document Arapaho plant names. This paper draws on both these sources: I first collated all known published sources on plant names, attempting to resolve the many botanical & linguistic issues which arose, & then worked in the field with Northern Arapaho elders to make positive identifications of as many plants as possible. The approach here is primarily linguistic: ethnobotanical uses of plants are not treated in this paper, though I have made extensive notes in the field on this subject, as well as collating the documented uses in the published literature.
