Research

research overview

  • I am a scholar of material culture, photography and film, textiles, and their relationship to the interwoven histories and philosophies of science and technology. Questions driving my work include: What is the relationship between making and knowing in the realms of art, technology, and the media arts? What is the relationship between theories of use and re-use, recycling and repurposing, as they pertain to contemporary practices of the media arts? How does waste mediate our shifting relationships to both nature and technology? How do textiles and other forms of clothing (treated pelts, barks, feathers, synthetics) make us human, and make us who we are? How do we, as humans, find ways to innovate and individuate through the incorporation of pieces of the very technologies that can seem to be overtaking us? My projects address this central question along different axes: by examining surveillance media (in my first monograph [2012]), the automation of industrial manufacture (in my second monograph [2020]), or in extraction of solar data and critical minerals (in the current project “Climax: Conversations on the Plurality of Worlds” [2019 to the present]).
