  • Defect structure and chemistry define material performance. Mechanical, electronic, thermal, and optical properties of a solid can be strongly influenced or outright dictated by the defect nature and concentration. Ranging in scale from grain boundaries to single atoms or vacancies, the characterization and manipulation of defects are key to effective materials engineering. In the Stoldt Laboratory at the University of Colorado, Boulder (UCB), we apply state-of-the art synthesis and characterization techniques to manipulate the defect structure of advanced inorganic materials. Of current interest to our research group is the development of next-generation solid-state ion conductors, understanding the impact of non-stoichiometry in metal chalcogenides, the development of scalable, high-throughput methods for nanocrystal formation, and the discovery and implementation of low-cost hydrogen storage materials.

  • CHEM 5251 - Materials Chemistry and Properties
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2018
    Lec. Understanding of materials from chemistry perspective including metals, oxides, semiconductors and polymers. Basic description of chemical preparation of materials. Overview of fundamental properties of materials including structural, chemical, mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical properties. Description of behavior of materials and various applications in modern technology. Discussion of materials characterization methods. Same as CHEM 4251.
  • MCEN 1024 - Chemistry for Energy and Materials Science
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2020 / Fall 2020 / Spring 2021 / Spring 2022
    Covers the basic physical and chemical fundamentals underlying the disciplines of energy and materials, with a focus on topics relevant to your mechanical engineering education. These fundamentals include atomic structure, stoichiometry, the periodic table, chemical bonding, states of matter, thermochemistry and chemical reactions. Recommended prerequisite: one year of high school chemistry. Degree credit not granted for this course and CHEN 1201, CHEN 1211, or CHEM 1113.
  • MCEN 2024 - Materials Science
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018 / Spring 2019 / Fall 2021
    Provides an overview of the structure, properties and processing of metallic, polymeric and ceramic materials. Specific topics include perfect and imperfect solids, phase equilibria, transformation kinetics, mechanical behavior and material degradation. Approach incorporates both materials science and materials engineering components. Degree credit not granted for this course and GEEN 3024.
  • MCEN 4085 - Mechanical Engineering Senior Design Project 2
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018
    Second part of a two-course capstone design experience in mechanical engineering. Includes refinement of prototype, design optimization, fabrication, testing, and evaluation. Students orally present the final design and prepare a written report and operation manual for the product. GEEN-BS and GEEN-BSEPL students are not required to complete MCEN 4026.
  • MCEN 5024 - Materials Chemistry and Structures
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2018 / Fall 2019 / Spring 2021
    Provides graduate level students with a comprehensive overview of the chemistry and structure of material systems, with a focus on chemical bonding., the resulting material structures and their properties. This course is intended to become one of the four core courses offered in the new Materials Science curriculum. Course topics include: bonding in solids, crystalline and amorphous states, basic group theory, diffraction, metals and alloys, ceramics, and an intro to mat. characterization.
