  • I am a comparative political economist interested in why different countries pursue different public policies. I have lived and studied in many countries and am interested especially in the ways culture and institutions interact with each other. Recent work has been on tax policy and tax compliance in the USA and other democracies. I have just completed a book, 'Willing to Pay?' which uses laboratory experiments tests citizens' willingness to pay taxes in multiple countries. It is currently 'in press' with Oxford University Press, I am currently writing a book on American politics and history for Yale University Press (under contract).

  • FYSM 1000 - First Year Seminar
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2019
    Provide first year students with an immersive experience in an interdisciplinary topic that addresses current issues including social, technical and global topics. Taught by faculty from across campus, the course provides students with an opportunity to interact in small classes, have project based learning experiences and gain valuable communication skills. Seminar style classes focused on discussion and projects.
  • PSCI 2012 - Introduction to Comparative Politics
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018 / Fall 2018 / Fall 2020 / Fall 2021
    Most countries confront a variety of common political problems, including how to gain popular support, what kinds of political institutions are most appropriate, and how to distribute burdens and benefits to different segments of the population. Concentrates on learning how to compare different political systems and provides illustrative examples from several countries in both the industrialized and nonindustrialized world.
  • PSCI 3281 - Development of American Political Institutions
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2022
    Learn about the evolution of major American political institutions including the presidency, Congress, the judiciary, the party system and the right to vote.
  • PSCI 4703 - Technology, Society and the Future
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018 / Fall 2019 / Spring 2020 / Fall 2022
    Explores some of the remarkable technological advances made in recent years such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Social Media, "Big Data," Internet-Interconnectivity, etc. in order to better understand how they are reshaping the world around us. Looks at the implications of these technological advances for a variety of social and political issues including education, communication, medicine, international development, international relations, work, social life, politics, elections and democracy. Recommended Prerequistes: PSCI 2012 and/or IAFS 1000.
