Steven Bruns's recent research has focused on the life and music of American composer George Crumb. In the years he has studied Crumb's music, the composer has granted full access to unpublished manuscripts, correspondence, and other archival materials. Bruns has also lectured and published on the music of Gustav Mahler, Alma Schindler Mahler, Stravinsky, and Morton Feldman.

Student must have passed graduate preliminary exams and completed 6 credits hours of graduate-level theory before enrolling in course.
