  • Ganguly's research deals with international cinema, the primary focus being Indian cinema. He has written on the films of Satyajit Ray and Adoor Gopalakrishnan, both associated with the non-commercial film industry in India. His research continues to revolve around these figures and the Indian New Wave of the 70s and 80s.

  • ARTF 5023 - Topics in International Cinema
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2018
    Focuses on major international filmmakers who have had a decisive impact on world cinema. Students will learn how directors create their own innovative body of work with specific formal and thematic patterns and will also learn to place such work within multiple frameworks that will cover film history, theory, aesthetics, philosophy and social and cultural analysis. May be repeated up to 6 total credit hours provided topics are different. Recommended prerequisites: CINE 3051 and CINE 3061. Same as CINE 4023.
  • CINE 2513 - Major Asian Filmmakers
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2021
    Surveys the major Asian directors from China, India, Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Recommended prerequisite: CINE 1502. Non-majors will need instructor's consent. Formerly FILM 2513.
  • CINE 3002 - Major Film Movements
    Primary Instructor - Summer 2020 / Summer 2021 / Spring 2024
    Historical-aesthetic survey dealing with various styles, movements, genres or national cinemas. Can be taught in conjunction with the appropriate language department. Typical offers are in the French, the German or the Russian films, etc. Also offers detailed approaches to specific styles, subjects or genres: film comedy, melodrama, the Western, women filmmakers, German expressionist cinema, Italian neorealism, etc. May be repeated up to 12 total credit hours within the same term with departmental consent. Formerly FILM 3002. Restricted to Cinema Studies majors and minors. Non-majors/minors may be admitted with instructor's consent.
  • CINE 3003 - Major Film Directors
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2019 / Spring 2021
    Focuses on the work of a single director or a group of related directors. Course content varies each semester. Consult the online Schedule Planner for specific topic. May be repeated up to 12 total credit hours with departmental consent. Non-majors/minors need instructor consent. Recommended prerequisite: students with 57-180 credits (Juniors or Seniors). Formerly FILM 3003.
  • CINE 3043 - Topics in Critical Film Studies
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2019 / Spring 2020 / Spring 2021 / Spring 2023
    Prepares students for advanced Film Critical Studies work. Subject matter varies from semester to semester. May be repeated up to 9 total credit hours, provided topics are different. Formerly FILM 3043.
