Research

research overview

  • Professor Covert's research is focused on the behavioral ecology and conservation of Southeast Asian primates. He works closely with Vietnamese colleagues to study the feeding ecology, positional behavior, and habitat utilization of endangered monkeys with the aim of gaining a better understanding of their ecology so that long-term and sustainable conservation efforts can be developed. Noteworthy examples of this research is his collaborations with Dr. Le Khac Quyet in Ha Giang Province where they are conducting long-term study of the ecology of the critically endangered Tonkin snub-nosed monkey and with Drs. Hoang Minh Duc and Luu Hong Truong of the Southern Institute of Ecology working on a variety of biodiversity conservation projects. He also works in capacity building for the protected area system of Vietnam.

Teaching

courses taught

  • ANTH 2030 - Laboratory in Biological Anthropology 1
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2018 / Fall 2019 / Fall 2020
Lab in human osteology and musculoskeletal system emphasizing comparative primate morphology, adaptation, and the fossil record documenting the natural history of primates. Recommended corequisite: ANTH 2010. Meets the MAPS requirement for natural science: lab, when taken with ANTH 2010.
  • ANTH 3010 - The Human Animal
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018 / Spring 2020
Identifies genetic, anatomical, physiological, social, and behavioral characteristics humans share with other mammals and primates. Explores how these characteristics are influenced by modern culture. Recommended prerequisite: ANTH 2010.
  • ANTH 3770 - Primates of Vietnam: Conservation in a Rapidly Developing Country
    Primary Instructor - Summer 2022
Immersive global seminar that will take place in southern and central Vietnam. We will travel to Ho Chi Minh City to begin an exploration into the conservation of primates in this country. Vietnam is home to 25 primate species and a rapidly growing human population. This course will examine challenges, success, and failures in the conservation of these creatures within the context of development within the historical context of Vietnam.
  • ANTH 4170 - Primate Evolutionary Biology
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2019 / Spring 2021
Focuses on the fossil record of primates excluding the Hominini). Special emphasis is placed on delineating the origins of the order Primates, the origins of the primate suborders Strepsirhini and Haplorhini and the adaptations of extinct primates in light of our understanding of the modern primate adaptive radiations. Recommended prerequisite: ANTH 2010 or EBIO 1210. Same as ANTH 5170.
