Research

research overview

  • My principal research interest is modeling of oceans and oceanic processes. However, my current research focus is turbulent mixing in the oceans and the atmosphere. A related research activity is synergistic use of VHF radars and UAVs to study turbulent and layered structures in the lower moist troposphere through weeks-long field campaigns at a dedicated MST radar facility in Shigaraki, Japan. Another is study of mixing in the upper layers of the Bay of Bengal, which affects the intra-seasonal variability of Indian monsoon. I also study the use of radiosondes and GPS occultations to locate and quantify turbulence in the troposphere and the lower stratosphere, for applications to aviation safety. I also work on Aerospace related topics, such as the state of the commercial aircraft industry.

Teaching

courses taught

  • ASEN 4013 - Foundations of Propulsion
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2021
Describes aerothermodynamics and design of both rocket and air-breathing engines. Includes ramjets, turbojets, turbofans, and turboprop engines, as well as liquid, solid, and hybrid rockets.
  • ASEN 5018 - Graduate Projects II
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018
  • ASEN 5053 - Rocket Propulsion
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018 / Spring 2019 / Fall 2019 / Fall 2020
An in depth presentation of the theory, analysis, and design of rocket propulsion systems. Liquid and solid propellant systems are emphasized with an introduction to advanced propulsion concepts. Nozzle and fluid flow relationships are reviewed for background.
  • ASEN 5063 - Aircraft Propulsion
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2018 / Fall 2020
Designed to teach the theory, analysis and design of engines used for aircraft propulsion. Will deal with engine selection, engine performance, analysis and design of various components of modern aircraft engines, with emphasis on recent developments. Recommended prerequisite: ASEN 4013 or equivalent or instructor consent required.
  • ASEN 6028 - Graduate Projects II
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018
Exposes MS and PhD students to leadership positions in project management and systems engineering while working a complex aerospace engineering project as part of a project team. The project team may perform some or all of the following project activities during this second semester of the two-semester course sequence: requirements definition, design and design review, build, test, and verification. Recommended prerequisite: ASEN 4138 or ASEN 5148 or ASEN 5018 or ASEN 5158 or instructor consent required.
