Toward a Collective Undertaking of Self-Abolition Journal Article uri icon

Overview

abstract

  • Abstract; This article takes up the call to witness, reckon, and contemplate (the possibility of) solidarity by reading various expressions of and meditations on Black-Palestinian solidarity, with a particular focus on the response to the 2023–24 military assault on Gaza, to show first that key moments of “transnational solidarity” have helped push the “work” of solidarity, and that of liberation more generally, away from analogy, reciprocity, and appeals to shared humanity, and toward a vision of collective care and materially interconnected struggle. Where the latter two might fall short, “collective self-abolition” in the form of a commitment to or toward truth and freedom can help sustain collective liberation struggles.
