Here, Kocher comments on Bhanu Kapil's essay "Writing/not-writing: th[a][e] Diasporic Self: Notes Towards a Race Riot. At the onset of the essay, the first voice of Kapil's "Notes" insists on telling what the essay is about, what a novel is, what the novel can say about the part of the scene that doesn't function as an image, they depleted yet still livid collection of materials that a race riot is made from. As Kapil resists narrative imposition and an ordered telling, she wants most to imagine a way of telling which does not impose an ideology of telling, and so does not impose an ideology of power. What she imagines is a discourse of representation. What she imagines, she does not, will not, put forth as a complete discourse.
