abstract

  • When subjected to permanent ground movements, hybrid segmented pipes allow the joints to displace axially and deflect a prescribed quantity before locking up and restraining further movement. These pipe systems are mainly targeting improved performance under earthquake-induced ground deformations, but also apply to other types of ground-induced strain such as landslides, flooding-induced scour, and differential subsidence. The original hybrid-segmented pipe system developed in Japan has existed for over 45 years. The 1995 Hyogo Ken Nanbu earthquake in Kobe, Japan provided the first detailed documentation of this hybrid segmented pipe system when subjected to large permanent ground deformations. Wham and Davis (2019) recently published the first analytical solution for analyzing these hybrid segmented pipe systems. This analytical solution is used to examine hybrid-segmented pipe system performance using two well documented case studies from the 1995 Hyogo Ken Nanbu earthquake exposing buried pipelines to longitudinal permanent ground deformations. The new model is found to compare extremely well with the two cases where detailed measurements were taken in pipelines suffering strains from liquefaction-induced permanent ground movements.
