El área estudiada en el interfluvio de Tapiche-Blanco es un bloque de aproximadamente 315,000 ha de selva baja en la Amazonía peruana, delimitado por el río Tapiche al oeste, el río Blanco al este y al sur, y la confluencia de los dos ríos en el norte. El área está ubicada a unos 40 km de la frontera entre el Perú y Brasil y es casi equidistante — a unos 200 km — de tres importantes ciudades peruanas: Iquitos, Pucallpa y Tarapoto. Un trío de áreas protegidas rodea el interfluvio de Tapiche- Blanco, con la Reserva Nacional Matsés (420,596 ha) al norte y al este, la Zona Reservada Sierra del Divisor (1,478,311 ha) al este y al sur, y la Reserva Nacional Pacaya-Samiria (2,170,220 ha) al noroeste. The area we studied in the Tapiche-Blanco region is a ~315,000-ha block of lowland forest in the Peruvian Amazon bounded by the Tapiche River to west, the Blanco River to the east and south, and the confluence of the two rivers to the north. The area is about 40 km from the Peru-Brazil border and nearly equidistant—about 200 km—from three important Peruvian cities: Iquitos, Pucallpa, and Tarapoto. A trio of protected areas surrounds the Tapiche-Blanco region, with the Matsés National Reserve (420,596 ha) to the north and east, the Sierra del Divisor Reserved Zone (1,478,311 ha) to the east and south, and the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve (2,170,220 ha) to the northwest.
