La propuesta Reserva Comunal (RC) Matsés representa una extensión de 391.592 ha de selva baja dentro de la Amazonía Peruana, aproximadamente a unos 150 km de la ciudad de Iquitos en su límite norte y a unos 250 km de la ciudad de Pucallpa en su límite sur. El área semeja vagamente a un cuarto creciente debido a su curvatura alrededor de los límites sur y oeste de las tierras tituladas de la Comunidad Nativa Matsés. El área esta situada en el área interfluvial de los ríos Yaquerana, Gálvez y Blanco, haciendo que la propuesta RC Matsés se encuentra dentro del la cuenca medía del Yavarí, entre Sierra del Divisor al sur y al norte en la confluencia del Yavarí con el río Amazonas. La región está dominada por pequeñas colinas, siendo estas bajas y anchas en la parte norte del área protegida propuesta y más empinadas y estrechas en la parte sur. Los bosques crecen encima de una gran variedad de suelos, desde suelos arenosos, blancos y pobres en nutrientes hasta los suelos fértiles de las tierras bajas. La precipitación annual varia de 2.500 mm en el sur y 3.000 mm en el norte, con una época seca no muy evidente que ocurre desde junio a agosto (Marengo 1998). La temperatura promedia es de ~26C. Durante el inventario biológico y social de la propuesta RC Matsés realizada desde el 25 de octubre al 6 de Noviembre del 2004, el equipo social estudió siete comunidades dentro la Comunidad Nativa de los Matsés, y el equipo biológico se enfocó en tres sitios inhabitados en el norte, oeste, y al sur de las comunidades nativas (Figura 2). En esta sección damos una descripción breve de los sitios visitados por ambos equipos. The proposed Reserva Comunal (RC) Matsés is a 391,592-ha area of lowland forest in the Peruvian Amazon, ~150 km from the city of Iquitos at its northernmost edge and ~250 km from Pucallpa at its southernmost edge. The area traces a rough crescent shape as it arches around the western and southern borders of the titled indigenous lands of the Comunidad Nativa Matsés (Figure 2). Situated between the Yaquerana, Gálvez, and Blanco rivers, the proposed RC Matsés forms part of the middle Yavarí River basin, between the Sierra del Divisor to the south, and the confluence of the Yavarí and the Amazonas to the north. Small hills dominate the region: lower and wider ones in the northern portion of the proposed protected area, and steeper and narrower ones to the south. These forests are underlain by a great variety of soils, from nutrient poor white-sand soils to fertile floodplains. Annual rainfall ranges between 2,500 mm in the south and 3,000 mm in the north, with a weakly defined drier season from June through August (Marengo 1998). Average temperatures are ~26C. During the rapid biological and social inventory of the proposed Reserva Comunal Matsés from 25 October to 6 November 2004, the social team surveyed seven communities within titled Matsés lands, while the biological team focused on three uninhabited sites to the north, west, and south of the native communities (Figure 2). In this section we give a brief description of the sites visited by both teams.
