Dr. Mary Ann Allen is broadly interested in how DNA encodes life. She is majorly interested Down Syndrome, which is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21. Scientifically, she studies how DNA creates different cell types, and how alterations in DNA can alter the cells response to challenges. To better understand how DNA shapes life, Dr. Allen investigates the cellular process of reading DNA, known as transcription. Many changes in DNA can alter organism’s quality of life, and Dr. Allen's ultimate goal is to improve quality of human life. Additionally, Dr. Allen is interested in responsible conduct of research. She hopes to train young scientists in conducting well thought out and useful experiments.

Training in handling issues such as conflicts of interest, mentor/mentee relationships, peer review, research misconduct and authorship and publication. Reviewing policies regarding human and animal subjects, safe laboratory practices. Instruction on conducting quality research including collaborative research, the scientist as a responsible member of society, ethical issues, rigor and reproducibility which will include effective design, execution, analysis, interpretation and communication.
