My research program is in the field of experimental condensed matter physics. My group studies the magnetism and electronic properties of materials, using thermodynamic, electrical and thermal transport, cantilever-based magnetometry and Raman/IR spectroscopy. These physical quantities are investigated under extreme conditions such as very low temperature, high DC and pulsed magnetic field, high hydrostatic pressure and sometimes nanoscale spatial dimension. Specific experimental expertise includes thermoelectric phenomena, electrical and heat conductions particularly in the presence of magnetic ordering and in low dimensional systems near the phase boundary. My group also synthesizes high quality single crystalline semimetals and magnetic compounds.

PHYS 2150 - Experimental Physics 2
Primary Instructor
-
Spring 2018
One lect., one 2-hour lab per week. This course explores topics in physics through a combination of experimental investigations, data analysis, and teamwork skills. Normally taken concurrently with PHYS 2130 or PHYS 2170, this course may be taken after PHYS 2130 or PHYS 2170.
PHYS 3330 - Electronics for the Physical Sciences
Primary Instructor
-
Fall 2018 / Spring 2020 / Fall 2021 / Spring 2023
Introduces laboratory electronics for physical science students. Includes basic electronic instruments, dc bridge circuits, operational amplifiers, bipolar transistors, field-effect transistors, photodiodes, noise in electronic circuits, digital logic and microcontrollers. Students gain hands-on experience in designing, building and debugging circuits. Two lectures and one three hour laboratory per week. Concludes with a final project in which students design and build an experiment of their choice and present a seminar on the results.
PHYS 4230 - Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics
Primary Instructor

Spring 2019
Statistical mechanics applied to macroscopic physical systems; statistical thermodynamics, classical thermodynamics systems; applications to simple systems. Examines relationship of statistical to thermodynamic points of view.
PHYS 4340 - Introduction to Solid State Physics
Primary Instructor
-
Spring 2024 / Spring 2025 / Spring 2026
Discusses crystal structure, lattice dynamics, band theory, semiconductors and ferromagnetism.
