  • LING 3210 - English for Academic Purposes
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2021 / Fall 2024
    Designed for undergraduate students for whom English is an additional language, this course develops academic English skills for university-level work. Students sharpen English accuracy through academic reading, writing, speaking, and listening practice. They learn to express ideas more clearly, both orally and in writing, while engaging critically in class discussions, and giving presentations, including on a researched topic related to their major. Students improve grammatical accuracy, develop academic vocabulary, and expand critical thinking skills and metacognitive strategies. This course does not count toward the Linguistics major or minor. Recommended restriction: this course is restricted to non-native English-speaking students.

    Develop your English language proficiency through service-learning projects in the community. Give presentations about your culture to local high school or elementary school students, help in an exercise class for the elderly, plant flowers and vegetables at a local garden that serves the community, or prepare and give food to the poor at a food bank. There�s also the opportunity to collect needed items for the local homeless shelter and deliver them.

    Develop your listening and speaking skills while learning about and making art. Students will explore different types of art by meeting Boulder artists, visiting art studios and creating their own art in the class. Types of art could include clay pottery and sculpture, painting, drawing, mono prints, photography and/or recycled art.

They examine and discuss cultures similar to their own as well as those that are radically different.     This course is designed for students who need additional English language support and assistance to successfully complete university level coursework. Students receive instructional support in reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and writing strategies.
