  • Regarded as a world leader in the fields of plant ecology and alpine biogeochemistry, Professor Bowman has expanded his focus to include the effects of air pollution on plants, microbes and the environment at sites throughout the world. His peer reviewed publications have been cited over 6,000 times, with more than 600 citations in 2014 alone. His groundbreaking research addresses not only important scientific questions but also issues of broad importance to the environment and society. His research on the negative impact of atmospheric pollution on alpine plant communities is revealing that alpine areas are more susceptible to environmental change than expected. Bowman has made major contributions to the understanding of mountain ecosystems, and his research and influence have led to important policy changes at the national level.
    For Bowman, research and teaching go hand in hand. He is an outstanding mentor and teacher of graduate and undergraduate students. Many of his former students have gone on to stellar careers of their own. He not only involves students in his research, but also publishes with graduate and undergraduate students on a regular basis.
