In my research, I explore post-Soviet Russian documentary across such media as film, theater, and literature. I focus on contemporary theatrical productions and films from the 1990s-2010s and track the development of a diverse range of themes, ideas, images, and narratives deployed by several generations of artists working with documents in Russia. In my scholarship, I have assembled and operate with a conceptual toolbox provided by media and performance studies, as well as film and visual studies as interdisciplinary fields. More broadly, I am interested in Russian and Soviet cinema and theater, and in experimental performance and media forms (mediatized theater, performance-lecture, VR performance, etc.) from the 1950s onwards.

RUSS 3241 - Red Star Trek: Russian Science Fiction Between Utopia and Dystopia

Examines Russo-Soviet science fiction in literature and film. Within this popular genre, writers conceive and criticize social utopias, thus creating works situated between the poles of utopia and dystopia. Through discussions of Soviet and post-Soviet science fiction the course introduces a Russo-Soviet "alternative modernity" and studies its historical development. All readings are in English.
