Research

research overview

  • Dr. McKinney has focused his creative activities on recording projects including several with Dallas Winds. In 2019, he was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Classical Compendium category for producing the album 'John Williams at the Movies.' His research includes repertoire selection for public school ensembles and strategies for effective ensemble rehearsals. This research has been presented at conferences and provides a framework for public school conductors to choose repertoire that exposes students to a broad spectrum of musical concepts and skills. He also contributed to 'The Horizon Leans Forward' which highlights underrepresented voices in wind band music. He has also been involved in numerous commissioning projects for new music. His conducting includes honor ensembles, All States, and performances in Canada and Costa Rica. Dr. McKinney has co-presented research at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic and the Colorado Music Educators Association Conference.
